You can find the most complex and the most spectacularly developed fossil site of our continent 140 km away from Budapest.

This world famous nature reserve is the pearl of our geological heritage, declared protected in 1944. With its unrivaled richness, it is a site of the ancient world destroyed by a volcanic catastrophe 17 million years ago. The most important fossils of the site are the shark teeth, fossilized trees, leaf imprints and fossil animal footprints. Due to its outstanding natural value it was awarded with the European Diploma in 1995, and in 2000 it was put on the UNESCO World Heritage List of Nominations.

The area is an outstanding point of eco-tourism, the entrance gate to the Novohrad-Nógrád UNESCO Global Geopark. It is worth visiting its home page, the wide choice of its geo-touristic offer and of its educational trails are of international standard. Besides up-to-date information, scientific descriptions, works of reference can also be found there.

The area promotes the natural sights of the region, too. It offers whole day programs for hiking families, and for professional groups special, thematic guided tours are organized in the Miocene Park “Ancient Pompeii”.

The guided tours on the geological educational trail start every hour from 10.30am. You must buy a ticket connected to the concrete departure time.
