Easter egg hunt for adults

[28.03.2022-01.04.2022]

Last week we were again near Bükkzsérc not only to remove pine trees but also to measure and count them. With a cluppe (a caliper gauge used in forestry) the trees were measured at breast height, the diameter noted and the tree then marked with orange forestry marker paint. Since logging larger trees requires first obtaining the consent of higher authorities and second hiring a company, this task was necessary.

The following day we were in the Nagy Mező Landscape Reserve, where one can see particularly well the karst landscape with the various sinkholes, poljen and uvalas.

Thursday was a cliché day, as you would imagine in a national park. We drove to Kisgyőr and were let out on a slope there. Two volunteers, a GPS device, wild nature without any trails and rainy weather. Our task was to find spring Adonis anemones (Adonis Vernalis), mark them with the GPS device and write down the number of flowers at that spot. Finding the flowers felt a bit like an Easter egg hunt for grown-ups. For this reason, and because it was sloping terrain with partially impenetrable vegetation, we had difficulty bringing structure to our work.
