Origin: Miocene, Eggenburgian, Ottnangian. Geomorphological features: There are currently no known excavations in Karancsberény where there would be characteristic, researchable and presentable fossils. However, with different earthworks, such sites can be found at any time. In the first half of the 20th century, besides pieces of opalised trees, an imprint of a particularly intact palm leaf (Sabal sp.) was found in the Kisarany Field area of Karancsberény. From the petrified tree trunks of the Gyulakeszi rhyolite tuffs, Gábor Andreánszky described the Pinuxylon karancsense and Greguss described the new Pinuxylon haploxyloides pine species.
