The total length of the passageways of the Szent István Cave is 1,514 m, its vertical dimension is 101 m. In the building in front of the cave you can find the ticket office and a souvenir shop. This cavity is a temporary spring cave, formed by the karst water coming down from the surface through the water sinks from the area of Létrás-lápa and István-lápa, located on the eastern edge of the Great Plateau of the Old Bükk Mountains. The cave is made a unique sight by spectacular elutriation forms (e.g the Mammoth Teeth, the Mother-in-law Throat), together with wonderful dripstone formations, an unforgettable experience.
The cavity was formed in the mid-upper Triassic limestone, in the rock composition of the Fehérkő Limestone Formation. The first scientific description and the name came from Ottokár Kadić, who let himself down with a rope-ladder in 1913.
In 1927 they started to shape up the passageways of the cave, which were eventually open for the public in August, 1931.
The guided tour lasts for about 30 minutes. The temperature in the cave is +10°C all through the year, so wearing proper clothes is advised for the visitors.
The strictly protected Szent István Cave, managed by the Bükk National Park Directorate, has its entrance in Lillafüred, 3.5 km away from Miskolc. The entrance is 500 m from the Hotel Palota, near the road between Eger and Miskolc.
