During our volunteer service we stayed in Ipolytarnóc for a total of one month, once for two weeks at the beginning of June and once at the beginning of July. The visitor centre is not directly part of the Bükk National Park but it is managed by the Directorate. We lived in one of the guest houses at the edge of the forest and had feline visitors from time to time. Our work was a bit different than in the Directorate, we did not sit in the office but were mostly outside. Before we left for Ipolytarnóc, Balázs gave us Excel spreadsheets about different hiking trails around Ipolytarnóc. Our task was to walk the trails, mark the information tables with a GPS device and record everything with photos. Afterwards we collected all the conspicuous features in the tables. Another of our tasks was something very special, Ipolytarnóc is known for its abundance and quality of fossils and not everything is uncovered yet. We were allowed to continue the excavations and try our hand at being archaeologists ourselves. The work was a lot of fun but of course the surroundings were beautiful as well. Our accommodation was located in the middle of the forest, which we took advantage of with small trips and walks. During our second stay the reevaluation took place, you can read more about it in the blog entry “Important visitors in Hungary”.
