Welcome to Eger

[13.03.2022-19.03.2022]

We both arrived on Sunday the 03.13. As 03.15. is a Hungarian National Holiday, Monday was also free. Fortunately, Kornélia and Balázs had already thought about how to spend those two days and showed us Eger and the surrounding area. On Monday we went hiking in Cserépfalu and visited the Suba-lyuk cave, the Felhagyott kőfejtő outcrop and the Odor Castleruin outlook. After the exertion we went to eat together in a restaurant in a neighboring village.

Tuesday the 14th of March, we drove to the center of Eger. Starting at the Eszterházy University, Kornélia gave us a guided tour of the city. Among other things we walked past the Minaret and up to the castle. We saw the Hall of Heroes and in the Gothic Bishop's Palace the exhibition about the occupation of Eger. Afterwards it was shortly before four, an important time for Eger. Every day at 3.52pm (15:52 in Hungarian) a shot is fired from an antique gun to commemorate the occupation of 1552.

Wednesday (03.15.) was our first real working day, during which we first were introduced to everyone and then began to research a bit about the national park and the geopark. The next day we went directly into the nature at Bükkzsérc to remove pine trees (Pinus pinea) from a grassland. This area contains important and protected flora and fauna which is endangered by the invasive trees.

On Saturday we participated in a rubbish collection campaign in Andornaktálya.
