The noticeable rocky hill near Šurice, the “Owl Castle” (Soví hrad) (284 m) is the remainder of a 4-million-year-old volcanic diatreme. On its upper part the tuff layers remained in the former maar crater's lake. In the 13. century the fortress was built on the top of the cliff, owned by Beckov Dominion. The fortress had withstood even the Tartars invasion, but nowadays its remnants are hardly to be seen. There are remnants of water reservoir on top of the peak.
